Summary
Theatre review of the farce Our National Defences in which the main role of the young Frenchman, in love with the daughter of a British man who has impressed his servants as soldiers for fear of a French invasion, who "introduces himself into the garden in the disguise of an organ-boy." and, assuming military garb later brings a troop of neighbouring school boys to defeat the old man's troop. The role of the Frenchman is played by Madame Celeste and "the troop of juveniles, acted by young ladies, is a repetition of the feminine militaires who have been in vogue from the day of the Invincibles. Madame Celeste, who was the young Frenchman, 'made up' admirably for the organ-boy, and managed her young troop with her usual addrress."
