Summary
Review of the opera I Capuletti è Montecchi in which the part of Romeo is played by Madame Viardot, first two acts by Bellini. The review explains the history of the opera, which involved among other things dropping an old third act based on Garrick's version of Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet in favour of material from another opera on the material by Vaccaj: "So feeble was the last act, that future prime donne who counted Romeo in their rèpertoires found it advisable to substitute the last act of a wretched opera by Vaccaj. . . ." ". . . Mdlle. Grandolfi, a singer as remarkable for her beauty as for her talent, performed the part of Romeo with great success at Her Majesty's Theatre, nearly 18 years ago." "Madame Viardot's conception of the character of Romeo is poetical and graceful. . . . Romeo's anguish, while hanging over the tomb of Juliet, was depicted with consummate truthfulness."
