Summary

Titled either the Court Guide or the Tutor's Assistant, the play revolves around the "ludicrous disguise of three men in antiquated female dresses." The son of a grand duke is to be married with a princess but, in love with another young lady who is "in a neighbouring school," he rejects the arranged wedding. "Being locked up in the palace that he may not visit his inamorata, he escapes from the window, and visits the school as a lady of quality, and attended by a military friend in similar attire.  The tutor . . .  of the Prince, whose promotion depends on his restraining the eccentricities of his pupil, follows, likewise disguised as a woman--the sham aunt of the sham young ladies."  The situation resolves itself when the young woman turns out to be the princess he was supposed to marry this whole time. The actors are profusely praised by the reviewer on their performance: "The very clever manner in which the three pretended ladies were played by Messrs. Matthews, Roxby and Granby . . . gave the chief effect to the piece. . . ."
