Summary
On a dark and rainy night a thief, disguised as a woman, managed to get lodging for the night from a farmer. After the family went to bed, he removed his disguise and "whistled" out the door to his associates. They didn't catch his signal so he left the house to go fetch them. As he did so, a servant who saw him remove his disguise locked the door behind him. "A few evenings since a person, in woman's apparel, went to the house of a respectable Farmer in Essex, and entreated lodging for the night." With a female servant already in the kitchen up late doing needle work and hiding in alarm on hearing someone on the stairs: "Presently after the door of the kitchen opened; the pretended woman cautiously approached, and throwing off a gown and apron, discovered himself by his dress to be a man."
