CUMBERLAND HOUSE FETE

Summary

Review of a masquerade given by the Union Club at Cumberland House on May 31st with Prince of Wales in attendance. The masquerade displayed a large number of well supported characters, many of whom were in cross-dressing disguise, most prominently Beau Brummell: "Among others were a groupe of young men, dressed like boarding-school Misses from Queen-square, who appeared determined to take their full swing in the frolics of the evening. Although their behaviour was far from incorrect, we think the Ladies who conduct that seminary would not be pleased with such examples. Indeed, the Governess herself (personated by Mr. BRUMMELL) did not appear much disposed to check the gaiety of her pupils. They were attended by a man servant in rich laced clothes." Others in sexual disguise included "A Lady Pentweazle, who affected to be very squeamish, but had not objection to a little badinage." ("Pentweazle" suggests probable cross-dressing as the name refers back to Foote and Smart.). "Dighton as Juniper Jenny." "Lord LOVAINE - an admirable Old Maid." "Lady Melbourne - A Quaker." (Possible cross-dressing?) "Mr. Cathrington - A Lady".
