Summary
Theatre review of the opera the Marriage of Figaro, the small part of Cherubino the page is performed by Madame Vestris. "Madame Vestris humbled herself (if stooping to rise higher - reculer pour mieux sauter - be humiliation) so far as to play the character of Cherubino, the page.", "Madame Vestris, as the page, showed how much a clever performer can make of a character for which the dramatist has done nothing, and which, if personated by a less gifted artiste, would have proved a very subordinate, if not a very insignificant, character, as it has hitherto been considered when consigned to less skilful treatment than Madame Vestris bestows on all she undertakes."
