Summary
The Editor of the Times reproduces a speech, apparently by a Mr. Rice, in support of the members of the Municipal Commission in Cambridge. In discussing the feelings of commission members about the opposition they face, Rice comments: "it seems that a great discovery has been made; it is said that we have been acting illegally. If there were amongst us some of those persons of the other sex who sometimes masquerade in our clothes, I would endeavour to remove the alarm which they may have felt at the opinions expressed on this subject by certain grave and sapient lawyers." Rice both mobilizes the ridicule of women dressed as men in order to discredit the fearfulness of male commissioners as effeminate, and assumes the commonplace nature, and success, of women passing as men.
