Summary

Signora Tosi refused "to appear in male attire", an apparent breach of contract. Court debated decree against breeches parts in Milan. Commissioner Williams wondered if Milanese theatre decree was to govern in London and Paris. "He wished to know what was the practice. Pasta had appeared in the garb of a man, and had she a special contract to compel her?  He had, in some of the public prints, been somewhat censured for stating, at the last meeting, his surprise that the lady should dislike to wear the breeches, as most ladies did.  There was a good deal of warm temper shown at that meeting, and he had merely referred to the common saying to restore good feeling." "The COMMISSIONER thought that each party should state that it was or was not the practice to stipulate whether ladies should or should not assume male attire unless by agreement, and should adjourn the proceedings for that purpose."
