Summary
In production of a new work, The Rake and his Pupil; or, Folly, Love, and Marriage, the role of the Chevalier de Florville (played by Mr. Hemming), the pupil of the title, sees that character attend a "masked ball" "dressed as Mademoiselle Duportsil." The aim is to make a female character supposedly in love with the rake jealous, but instead the Marchioness de Barres sees though the disguise, and takes Duportsil home for dinner; her husband however thinks that the Chevalier is a woman; many hijinks ensue, including an Act II scene in which the Chevalier, now disguised "as Madame Brumont, a lady who, wishing to escape from certain family persecutions, requires concealment for a few days, and, for that purpose, wishes to assume manly habiliments."
