Summary

"On Saturday a student at St. Bartholomew's Hospital was charged with having been found in female attire walking in Fleet-street about 10 o'clock on Friday night." Watchman named Prince reports "a crowd of 400 persons" that were "shouting and hooting" at "what appeared to him to be a genteel young woman" because of the "discovery" that it was actually a man: "His disguise was complete, from the veil and boa, to the stays and Adelaide boots. He had no part of his male clothing on except his shirt. His sex was betrayed by his voice, upon some man accosting him and pressing his attention." On discovery he "appealed . . . for protection, and was taken to the watch house." "The prisoner, who appeared much ashamed, said he was tipsy, and he put on the clothes merely to call at a friend's house to see whether he would be recognized in masquerade. Several persons spoke as to his respectability, and he was discharged on paying a fine of 5s."
