Summary
Short news report about a woman on board the Sir Edward Banks wearing breeches underneath her dress: "a lady passenger was observed to ascend the cabin stairs very awkwardly, and displayed, what she appeared very desirous to conceal, a huge pair of breecheds beneath her petticoats. Mr. Joseph Tyler, the acting tide-surveyor, and Thomas Ward, tide-waiter, on board, suspecting contraband goods were concealed in the lady's inexpressibles, followed her on deck, and requested her to return to a private cabin, where Mrs. Probert, the Custom-house searcher, divested the lady of the unfeminine garment, which was filled with blond lace, value 48l. 12s."
