Summary
A woman "who had constantly appeared in the disguise of man's apparel" was discovered at death. "She was an orphan of illegitimate intercourse" and dressed as a boy "to obtain a livelihood" and also for protection, so that she would "be less exposed." "Worked with great industry in paving the streets" in Paris and became "overseer to the paviour." Worked in husbandry every winter in Saint-Vigor-les-Moutiers. "The better to disguise her sex, she made propositions of marriage to several young women." "Her secret never transpired, and probably would not have been known at this time, if we consider the age at which she died, had she been attended by a professional man in whom she could have safely reposed confidence." "She has left written securities to the amount of 1400 livres."
