Summary
"Mad. de la Motte made her escape from the Saltpetriere, in man's cloaths, with a switch in her hand. She passed the outer gate at 10 o'clock in the morning, giving her arm to a young girl called Maria, who used to wait on her as a chambermaid. That apparel was procured for her by a young woman who had recovered her liberty through the Countess's generosity. Her name is Angelica; she had contrived to throw the man's dress over the wall into the workhouse. This flight, however, seems, if not approved, at least countenanced or connived at, by Government." [Jeanne de Valois-Saint-Rémy, aka de la Motte, was imprisoned for her role in the affair of the diamond necklace in France.]
