The Duchess of Berri in La Vendée.

Summary

The Duchess of Berri "dressed as a peasant boy, having the appearance of a youth of 18" (see top of col. E) as a part of her return to France from exile in Edinburgh. "Her light auburn tresses were completely hid under a brown wig." A boy who helps her had met her in 1828 and "recognized her even under her disguise." On falling into a river "had no change of clothes, and was greatly embarrassed' but enters a nearby house and wraps a blanket "round her whilst her clothes were dried." (Berri history continued in 23 Sept. 1833 issue, p. 3, referencing the "aristocratic whiteness of her legs" [col. D] when taking her shoes off when walking in peasant garb.)
