Summary
Mrs. Cargill's elopement "in Macheath's clothes." Cargill plays Macheath for Coleman at Covent Garden "with the sex reversed"; Bannister played Polly; Gay's "opera had a great run. But this enchanting Syren eloping with a near relation of the Manager's, at a time when her name was announced to perform Macheath the ensuing evening, threw the little Manager into a real distress; in the height of which he applied to Mrs. Wells to perform the character . . . . But now another obstacle arose to perplex this manager: Mrs. Cargill had gone off in Macheath's clothes."
